Jess and Mildred Fisher
College of Science and Mathematics
On June 13, 2005 the College was renamed in honor of one of its distinguished alumni, Jess Fisher, Class of 1934, and his wife, Mildred. Through the generosity of the Robert M. Fisher Memorial Foundation, the Fisher gift provides a major endowment to the College that will enable us to make a giant leap forward in our transformation into a truly outstanding college of science and mathematics and provide the best undergraduate education in the sciences and mathematics in the State of Maryland.
At the undergraduate level we have outstanding B.S. degree programs in Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Sciences, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as interdisciplinary B.S. degree programs in Environmental Science and Studies, and in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics. At the graduate level we have M.S. degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Applied and Industrial Mathematics, Environmental Science, and Mathematics and Science Education, and a new doctoral program in Applied Information Technology. A new master’s program in Forensic Chemistry is planned to begin in fall 2006.
In the College we have made the commitment to develop well-educated and confident graduates who are well prepared to respond creatively to the challenges of a new century. Science is becoming increasingly important as our world evolves and is challenged by rapid technological change. More and more, science will determine the road into the future. The Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University is helping to build that road through its distinctive, student-oriented teaching and learning environment, and its highly acclaimed undergraduate student research programs that offer students the opportunity to learn science by doing science. Through the many internships and co-op experiences available within our college, students also gain practical experience in the workplace that many times leads directly to employment upon graduation.
So, what do you want to be and where do you see yourself in 10 years, or 15, or 20? A molecular biologist working to cure a crippling disease, a forensic chemist performing DNA analysis in a crime lab, a computer and information security specialist, a science or mathematics teacher, a materials scientist developing nanorobots as tiny machines that can enter and explore the human body in order to locate tumors and other medical conditions, an environmental activist, a medical doctor or dentist, an actuarial scientist studying risk management, an astrophysicist studying the properties of quasars and black holes? Your opportunities are boundless, and the potential for satisfying and rewarding careers nearly limitless.
