Writing Contest:
Speaking Out about Violence Against
Women
Violence against women continues to be an enormous problem in
our society. Many college students are directly affected by this
issue. It is time to speak out, no longer keeping it secret.
Towson University students are invited to submit pieces of
poetry, short fiction or creative non-fiction that captures
their reactions to this epidemic, expressing the range of
reactions to witnessing and/or directly experiencing violence
against women. Select pieces will be chosen to be read at a
reception on April 15, 2009.
Submission Guidelines
1.
Submissions are limited to current Towson University students
only.
2.
Entries must be original works.
3.
Submissions should be limited to poems, short fiction and
creative non-fiction.
4.
Submissions should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font.
Accepted lengths for submissions are:

1250 words for fiction and nonfiction
·
30 lines (or one page) for poetry
5.
Submissions are limited to one per student.
6.
Authors may choose to read their piece at a reception on April
15, 2009 or we will designate a reader.
7.
Pieces will be considered for possible publication by
Grub Street, as
well as posted online through the Counseling Center website.
Authors may choose to publish their pieces anonymously or under
a pen name. If you are uncomfortable with either or both of
these options for publication, you must make the committee aware
of your interests with your submission.
8.
Authors may withdraw their pieces from review at any point by
contacting Dr. Julie McKenna at jmckenna@towson.edu.
9.
Deadline for entries in February 28, 2009.
10.
Submissions and/or
questions should be sent to
jmckenna@towson.edu and “Daring to Share” should be marked
in the subject line.
11.
Applicants will be notified of the status of their submissions
by March 30, 2009.
