SUBSTANCE TREATMENT PROGRAMS
Alcohol and Drug Education and Awareness Program
Offered over a 6-week period meeting twice per week, the Alcohol and Drug Education and
Awareness Program is intended to provide personalized education about alcohol and other drugs so
that participants will become more aware of their own use and be placed in a stronger position
for self-diagnosis of a problem. Many students referred by the Towson University Judicial
Affairs are offered this program or a referral as necessary. Students who have received a
citation in the community or even in other states have been offered this program to satisfy
court ordered or probationary requirements. Many too have simply sought the information from
this program for their own enrichment. If during the intake process a charge for the service
is determined, the cost is $200.00. The fee is paid to through the Bursar's office.
The Alcohol and Drug Education and Awareness Program is usually offered four times per year
(twice per semester). Two of these programs are offered simultaneously making a total of eight
programs per year. An intake is necessary with the director of the program. A student
becomes a client as he or she enrolls by signing an agreement to attend. Dates, times and
fees are then explained and recorded on the agreement. Also discussed and processed during the
intake is authorization to disclose any enrollment, attendance and completion information with
any other person outside of the Counseling Center.
Substance Therapy/DWI Programs
On-going groups are offered through the year for those who have received a DWI
or have recognized a serious problem with their use of alcohol or other drugs. Meeting weekly the
group counseling focuses on education about chemical dependency and recovery, abstinence from
use, networking for the support of others to not use and finding activities that support
continued recovery. This program has also been offered for aftercare
from previous treatment such as the education program above.
Generally, the participant who wishes to enroll in this program needs to commit to a 6-month
(26 weeks) agreement. Other details about the program are discussed at intake including any
fees. The charge for this program unless waived are $350.00. Individual counseling is
provided for those when the need is perceived.
Confidentiality
The Substance Treatment Programs follow the Federal requirements governing the release of
information about clients who are receiving alcohol and /or drug counseling services.
Generally, information is only released when a signed written document by the client receiving
these services has been granted. Information about the laws governing confidentiality are
provided and discussed at intake.
