Admission and Audition
There is a three-stage admissions process into the B.F.A. professional degree program. First, you must successfully apply to Towson University, second, you must successfully pass one of our four auditions with an opportunity to re-audition a second time, and third, you must successfully complete the Dance Foundational courses with a B average (3.0) or above to continue in the major curriculum.
To apply for an audition slot, you must submit a separate Dance Audition Application and Written Response to the Department of Dance and participate in a performance audition. This audition determines your acceptance into the First Year Foundations courses and your eligibility for a scholarship. Students are encouraged to audition early to ensure consideration for talent scholarships.
For your application to be completed, we must receive the Dance Audition Form, Written Response Form and a head shot prior to the audition:
For more information, please call the Department of Dance at 410-704-2760 or e-mail mdemeo@towson.edu.
Only 30 applicants are seen during an audition session. Additional auditions may be scheduled to accommodate requests for audition opportunities. Applications for a certain audition date are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may only audition twice for the major. If you are accepted into the dance major and do not attend the following fall, you must petition the department for later acceptance.
Pre-Dance Majors
The Department of Dance continues to accept pre-dance majors, but only students who have passed the audition. Students missing the auditions, choosing not the audition, or not passing the audition by May 1 will be moved to the category of "undecided" or "undeclared." These students will be encouraged to take non-major dance classes and audition or re-audition in their freshman year to join a cohort with first-year dance majors.
Physical Exam Requirement for Foundational First-Year Courses
After students have successfully auditioned for the pre-dance major program, they will then need to complete a physicial examination form before they can be admitted into any dance technique class. Part 2 of the document requires a physician's signature. The forms are returned to Maria DeMeo, Department of Dance, Towson University, 8000 York Road, Towson, MD 21252.
