Biography

Trudy Cobb Dennard is the Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts & Communication at Towson University. She earned her MFA in Dance at the University of Michigan and has studied many styles and techniques of dance including Dunham technique with Clifford Fears, jazz with Pepsi Bethel, Bucket technique with Trudy Cobb-DennardGarth Fagan, African dance with Chuck Davis and African-American dance styles with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. She performed with The Bucket Dance Theatre and performs as a soloist or with other artists under the auspices of Trudy Cobb & Dances. She embraces social and political commentary as subject matter and applies elements from life experiences to her choreographic process for concert and theatrical dance.  Cobb has been a faculty member and/or guest artist at SUNY Binghamton, Memphis State University, SUNY Brockport, Arizona State University, Wayne State University (MI), and Western Michigan University. She has collaborated with composers, orchestral directors, playwrights, actors, other dancers and directors.  She has directed and choreographed musicals and has received grants to support her choreography. 

Trudy Cobb’s research interests include Trudy Cobb-Dennardthe preservation of African dance forms by regionally based African American dance companies and the documentation of the contributions of African Americans to the field. She has collected the oral history of Joseph Nash, dance historian and the foremost archivist of African American dance memorabilia. Her interest in the use of video capture as a teaching tool and for the development of creative works began in 1980. As possible, she continues to work toward improving teaching effectiveness through the use of digital technology and supports efforts towards innovative approaches to the delivery of the material.

Having also served SUNY Binghamton as associate dean for academic affairs and Western Michigan University as chair of dance, she is frequently invited to serve as a program evaluator or consultant. She presents workshops on arts administration, modern dance, dance and technology, jazz dance, and African-American dance styles.
