Biography
Nicole Martinell is an emerging scholar in the fields of dance and kinesiology. In 2008, she received a M.F.A. in Dance from Texas Woman’s University (TWU). She also has a B.S. in Kinesiology with a minor in Dance from Pennsylvania State University. Martinell was one of the founding members of Kinetic Artists Collective, a group of independent choreographers that performs in the Dallas metroplex area. She was also a member of Dance Lab, an improvisation company, and DanceWorks, a performance and community outreach-based company, while living in the Denton, TX area. Experimenting with innovative performance settings, she co-produced an improvisation-based site-specific dance concert (Experiencing Landscape in Motion: A Campus Tour of Dance) that premiered in May 2007.
Collaborating with TWU’s Kinesiology Department, she developed original research on the moments occurring at the knee of the supporting leg at the ballet barre. This research was presented in Canberra, Australia, at the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science conference in 2007, recommended for publication in the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science, and received recognition in the Student Research Award Program. Her recent research focuses on how students sense and perceive the series of barre exercises in connection to their preparedness to fully move in the center floor.
Martinell has trained at such places as Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Broadway Dance Center, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and she has recently studied with Irene Dowd, Sarah Gamblin, Larry Keigwin, Mary Williford-Shade, and Melissa Young. Along with teaching ballet, modern, body conditioning, and Bartenieff Fundamentals at TWU, she was an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Texas. Recently moving to the area, she now joins the adjunct faculty at the Community College of Baltimore County and Towson University.
