Biography
Ms. Perez has resided in the Baltimore/ Washington area since 1978 after receiving her Masters in Dance from the University of Colorado at Boulder and directing her own company. Upon joining the dance faculty of the University of Maryland at College Park, she also became a soloist with Maryland Dance Theater, a modern dance repertory company in residence. There she danced lead roles throughout the east coast working with such choreographers as, Anna Sokolow, Murray Louis, Lar Lubovitch, Matthew Diamond, Hannah Khan, Rachel Lambert, Elisa Monte, Dan Wagner and Alvin Mayes. Ms. Perez has been on the faculty of numerous institutions including, George Mason University, Montgomery College, The Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet, James Hubert Blake High School of Montgomery County Maryland and the Chechetti Council of America. She was honored by the Wolf Trap Foundation for The Arts for her dedication to teaching the arts in education and was also invited to perform for the Dance Place’s 25th Anniversary of Washington’s Leading Women Artists. Sandra has presented for the National Dance Association and the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In addition to her many teaching accomplishments, Ms. Perez has choreographed for professional companies and youth groups throughout the United States including for the Westport Ballet in Kansas City and Lancaster Ballet Theater of Pennsylvania. She holds the Advanced Professional teaching certificate and is a Certified Movement Analyst through the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in NYC. She has expanded her research in dance to encompass her philosophy of mind and body connected as one as a vehicles for expression and thus a tool for healing. Ms. Perez is currently an Assistant Professor at Towson University where she administers the K-12 certification in dance teaching. She supervises student teachers, teaches Dance Education courses and First Year Foundational Ballet.
